Pencils, crayons, notebooks, and loose leaf paper: these are staples of the average student’s successful school year, the tools of the trade when it comes to learning and participating in class.
But what about those returning students who can’t afford to stock up on some of the basic necessities before the first bell rings? Enter Communities in Schools Cape Fear, the area resource for public schools, and Lumina Station! In an effort to support our local youth, we’re hosting a Stuff the Bus event in conjunction with CISCF on Saturday, August 18.
Join us between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. for a school supply drive and kick-off for the 2018-19 academic year, which benefits students of New Hanover and Pender counties. You won’t be able to miss this back-to-school shindig – just look for the bright yellow school bus that will be parked in the front lot facing Eastwood Road!
The organization welcomes donations of everything from backpacks and binders, to glue sticks and calculators, but there are a few less common items on the wish list that students will need this year, too. For instance, we asked a few local teachers what they thought, and all of them mentioned Clorox wipes, tissues, and baby wipes as things that were important for kids to have access to at school. If you don’t have time to shop beforehand, the organization also accepts monetary contributions that enable its staff to make purchases as needed.
When you get to the center for our Stuff the Bus kick-off, be sure to stop by Snowie Shaved Ice for some delectable refreshments between 1 and 4 p.m., on the sidewalk in front of the bus. In addition to being a welcome treat in the warmest part of the day, every shaved ice item sold is another dollar that Snowie Shaved Ice is giving back to the cause! You can also bring the kids by for entertainment by No Sleeves Magic; look for the pirate magician performing outdoors between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
If you find that you need to do a bit of shopping for yourself when you stop by to make your donation, J. McLaughlin is hosting a special sip and shop to coincide with the rest of the property’s activities! Stop by for a perusal of some of this fashionable merchant’s latest wares and bring any last-minute school supply donations for the event.
Can’t make the event? If you’re a loyal visitor and patron to any one of our many shops, restaurants, or resident businesses, you’ve probably seen decorative barrels around the center in the last month. These have been instrumental in allowing our merchants to take donations for CISCF, and we all thank our wonderful customers for their support so far!
Accepted supplies can still be dropped off at many locations within Lumina Station leading up to the event, such as our August Merchant of the Month, Island Passage. Other involved merchants include Monkee’s, Beanie & Cecil, Port Land Grille, Gentlemen’s Corner, Harbour Club Day Spa & Salon, and Airlie Moon. Visit any of these local favorites in the next week to drop off a donation!
Mark your calendars and be sure to join Lumina Station on Saturday, August 18, for a day of fun and to help CISCF fill up our students’ backpacks this school year!
