Getting Together with the Neighbors

At Lumina Station, we’re all about being good neighbors.

Whether that means working with fellow merchants during the busy season, helping out a friend, or lending a hand during a fantastic community fundraiser, the shops, restaurants and offices housed here focus on being community-minded on a daily basis.

When the Good Shepherd Center had an opportunity for us to help stock the shelves, a number of our merchants leapt at the chance! Among the initiators in organizing the special store events, held Wednesday, June 13, were the specialty shops Airlie Moon and J. McLaughlin, whose managing staffs helped the Good Shepherd arrange for the donation drops and helped promote the individual events so that they would be a hit among the loyal visitors to Lumina Station.

The first merchant to inspire the events for the Good Shepherd, Julie from Airlie Moon spread the word across the Lumina Station community and already had her own promotion lined up. At her store, guests were encouraged to bring dry or packaged foods such as peanut butter, oatmeal, cereal, and other typical breakfast and lunch items to the shop between 5 and 8:30 p.m., during which time they could enjoy complimentary prosecco and sweets as a thank you from the staff for their participation. The first 30 customers also received goody bags!

Between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., J. McLaughlin hosted a sale that offered 15% off its merchandise for any customer, as well as a convenient drop-off point for donations to the Good Shepherd Center. But the shop didn’t stop there; through June 16, J. McLaughlin acted as a donation outpost for the community and even held a raffle for all participants. When someone donated toward the Good Shepherd Center, he or she was automatically entered to win a store gift card!

Other stores took the day to offer special sales promotions as well as donation hot spots. At Island Passage, customers could receive 15% off their choice of one item with every $5 donation, and Lilies & Lace honored a deal of 20% off any one item in appreciation for donations. Ravenous customers made their way to Port Land Grille with their contributions, then grabbed a scrumptious meal for themselves.

In the end, the Good Shepherd Center said that it gathered more food during this drive than it typically does in a two-week donation collection event. As always, Lumina Station’s merchants were impressed by the way their customers turned out to support the community.

In our seaside shopping village, there’s always something new to involve our neighbors with and to bring the merchants, organizations and visitors together!
